THE EUROPE CAFÉ INITIATIVE BY #STANDFORSOMETHING

Doroteja, Giuliana and Maria, three #STANDFORSOMETHING youth activists launched the Europe Café talks during the summer of 2021. Their initiative is targeted to high school students from across Europe. The aim is to engage youngsters in conversations about the future of Europe and raise awareness on the importance of youth participation.

The first discussion happened on 5 July, 2021 and revolved around the subject of climate action. They tackled the topics of fast fashion and plastic pollution and came up with some suggestions.

The group agreed that the fashion industry can play a significant role in reaching the objective of climate neutrality by 2050, a target set by the President of the European Commission in the European Green Deal, Europe’s new agenda for sustainable growth.

The importance of education to bring about change was also underlined. Most schools and universities are beginning to see education in sustainability as essential to the formation of the next generations. They also highlighted the importance of supporting a more sustainable industry to facilitate the transition towards a low-carbon and circular economy.

The Europe Café talks also raised the issue of plastic pollution, supporting the idea of increasing the uptake of recycled plastics and contributing to a more sustainable use of plastics.
